Laps For Life 2012
This our sixth year for the event and we’d like to thank all the drivers, sponsors and contributors for their support over the years. This year we have a special prize for the driver who raises the most pledges for the charity. The winner will receive a PRS Starla (shown below) autographed by many of the past winners of the 24 Hours Of Daytona.
The recipient of the proceeds this year will again benefit the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center.
Chris Cobetto, director of NASA Mid-Atlantic, started this festival of speed 11 years ago. It’s a great opportunity to meet the public, see great racing and drifting and support a great charity. To support the cause, click the Pledge button above.
We started the event, Laps For Life in 2007 as a way to add to our annual golf tournament and auction to benefit Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. The fundraiser takes place in June at Summit Point Raceway, near Charlestown, WV at the NASA Racing event, Hyperfest. Over the years, Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center has been the predominant recipient of proceeds. Last year, due to a specific need, Ken Wood and Wells For Ghana was the recipient. Ken continues to do good works in Ghana and is still bringing clean water to the very poor in that region of the world. To get updates on Ken’s work, go to www.wellsforghana.org.
This year the proceeds will again go to Johns Hopkins. Specifically, the funds go to the The Living With Cancer Resource Program at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Michael Hibler, Senior Associate Director of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine offered the following description of the program.
“The Living with Cancer Resource Program is about taking care of the whole patient and family. Today, the battle against cancer is happening under the microscope, on a molecular basis. At Hopkins, we recognize that a cancer diagnosis has the power to change an individual’s perspective forever. Patients and their families need tools to define and solve problems during what is often the most uncertain time in their lives.
The Living with Cancer Resource Program was designed to offer supportive care programming to cancer patients and their families when they need it most - during their cancer treatment. The proceeds from Laps for Life have established individual and group programming focused on helping patients and their families build bridges back to wellness. Whether it is access to the latest in guided imagery, meditation and massage therapy or support groups for brain cancer, blood cancers and prostate cancer allowing patients and families the opportunity share with others with similar diseases. Many patients and families benefit from educational classes taught by expert social workers on topics like managing finances and can work directly with social worker to apply for government and private financial resources. This type of service ensures that when their cancer has been put into remission they aren't saddled with the reality of economic disability where the threat of foreclosures and bankruptcy loom.
Laps for Life is keeping our patients and families in front for the race of their lives. Your support assures that the burden of cancer is not something that our patients and families face alone.”
We at PRS are happy to offer our support to this program and are proud to have you come alongside in supporting Laps for Life. Thank you!
